Christopher Deam:  Restyling the Airstream

Everyone wants to be successful and have a lot of money right? Like creating something that could lead to millions of dollars, for example, the IPhone. Christopher Deam got the chance to recreate the Airstream for his company.

An airstream is a luxury vehicle that are known for their rounded aluminum bodies that were from the 1930s. In 1999 Deam was confronted by a famous company called Wilsonart. They wanted him to design a booth for he 2000 International Contemporary Furniture Fair. Deam decided to redesign the airstream without knowing that it would later create a lot of attention.

Deam did a lot of research to figure out what went wrong with the earlier creations of the airstream so he could improve them to make them modern and more useful. He found that the interiors were out of sync with the exterior shell of the airstream. This could be very dangerous traveling with a vehicle this way.

Not only did he want to make the vehicle more safe, but also one that would attract more eyes at the furniture fair. It was difficult figuring out how to design the airstream since it is completely round and there are no two walls and a ceiling that are attached to each other. The trick about this project was that Deam only could use existing technology, and there was no money or tooling or molding. Deam is a very creative person who finished the airstream with a very modern look to it.

While reading comments that people have left on this video I have realized that most people didn’t care for the fact that Deam took the time to redesign the airstream. They like the way it looked before it was done. Personally looking at the different pictures from before and after I like the look of the new version. This might just be due to my generation and people above thirty years of age just like objects the way they come.

Christopher Deam’s work got the attention of many people after the airstream trailer. His project begin the world’s love of modular and small homes.
