Shukla Bose: Teaching One Child At a Time

I did not realize how many children do not go to school.

Hearing the numbers of kids that don’t go to school just in the slums of Bangalore was a shock. Shukla Bose is one of the most amazing women I have watched on TED. She made her own organization, Parikrma Humanity Foundation, which she helps children in the slums get an education. She seems to put all of her time and energy into her organization. I like that she was focusing on the one child at a time aspect because that one child might be like Parusharam, who lives in an orphanage, can be focused on by someone who cares. Shukla Bose is a good influence on these children and I am glad that someone cares enough to go and make a school that children, who usually stay at home and work, can go and learn usefull skills that can someday help them have a better life.

I think that we could learn from her and go help the children that do not have what we have.

In one of the videos she showed the mothers of some of the children that went to the schools that Shukla built talked about their children. The mothers all talked about how well behaved their children are and how mischevious their children were before they went to school. The last mother talked about how when they asked their children what they wanted to be when they grew up the children answered that they wanted to be doctors, artists, and software engineers. There were also videos that children spoke about books and fast bikes. Shukla showed these videos because these children did not know english when they first went to the schools and look how far they have come. Although at certain parts it was hard to understand them, I believe that they will improve more and will go to the junior college that Shukla has built. In the one of the last videos she shows, one of the girls that went to her school was chosen for the the Duke University talent program.

In this video, she talks about the curriculum of the school and how she decided to use the best curriculum possible, the ICSC.

Many people laughed at her and thought she was crazy to choose such a tough curriculum on her students. They thought that the students would not be able to do the curriculum. Shukla showed them that the students are not just doing well at the curriculum, that they are excelling at it. She also sheds some light into a myth that all parents in the slums just want there children to go and work instead of getting them an education. Parents actually want their children to have a better life than them.

Shukla’s schools were so popular that she even started a program for the parents of children to come and learn afterschool. At least twenty-five mothers come regularly to the afterschool program and Shukla wants this program to continue. Shukla even talks about the fathers and how most of them are alcoholics and how she gave them jobs after they went through de-addiction labs. The father’s work in the kitchen at the schools and they get to see how much the children appreciate their food.
