Nick Sears and his dad, Ron Sears, have together built a very interesting piece of technology in the Orb. The Orb consists of LED lights that spin around an axis to create an image. This technology is called persistence of vision. Nick Sears presents the Orb that he and his dad put together based on the idea of the United Nations to view global trends and data that goes on around the globe. This idea originated in 1962.
This idea seems to be very advanced in its development, but so far as the actual items they’re making they seem to be useless to todays world. This idea’s development is advanced because it uses two different directions of axis-spinning. These two directions create a sphere of light as seen in the video.
This video is also interesting because it is a guy and his son making some high tech machine at home. It is not like some mass produced machinery made by a ton of other machines. It is two minds creating something by hand. I don’t believe that this will have any effect on my life, but these are very cool to look at. Possibly even cooler through making images like the globe. Then making images even more complex than that. This would be a great stretch of the mind though because it is just a string of LED’s spinning fast.
