Margaret Wertheim:  Crochets the Coral Reef

Coral is an interesting organism. It is found in different parts of the world. The coral reefs around the world are dying because of the warming temperatures.

These women are doing what mathematicians thought was impossible. With crocheting the women and some men around the world are creating these magical organisms. The only way to make a replica of these organisms is by crocheting. Margret had to not only make these organisms but she had to fill a 3000 square foot gallery with them. Some of here coral installations could range from 5 feet to twelve feet in height.

The math that goes into these figures is amazing. The math is a form of geometry that makes these figures possible. Some math mathematicians bases them on straight lines and circle and others didn’t even bother with it. For the mathematicians to say it is impossible for these figures they did not look into the creatures on this earth who have been doing it for years. So with the figures now being produce by crocheting math postulates are now being proven wrong.

My message to people: don’t rule anything out without trying to prove if you are right. We have advanced our research into creating new ways to understand organisms on Earth. With the coral reefs dying these women are preserving its image worth their hard work.
