Gary Lauder beings his talk by saying that energy efficiency is not only based on the car, but also road design, mainly intersections.
There are two types of intersections signalized and unsignalized. 50% of crashes occur at intersections, but recent studies have found a solution. Roundabouts can reduce crash chances by 40% and fatal crashes by 90%. Besides saving lives roundabouts also save time, money, and the Earth. There is less pollution because there is no need to stop and go, which uses up more gas thus causing more pollution.
If you see his math you will understand that a lot of money is wasted when you have to wait at a stop sign or traffic light.
Unfortunately roundabouts can not be used everywhere. They cannot be used at a T three way intersection. So what can we do? We don’t want to use a stop sign because that wastes time and money because maybe that side road is hardly used. We don’t want to use a yield sign because the minor road will hardly be able to go if the major road is very busy.
So Mr. Lauder has come up with a new sign.
This merges the stop sign and the yield sign.
